Schools needed a centralized solution for parent communication that would:
Discovery and Planning
We began with comprehensive sprint kickoff meetings to align the team on priorities and goals. Through collaboration with stakeholders, we established clear MVP requirements and documented them in detailed Software Requirements Specification (SRS) documents. To manage tasks across design and development teams effectively, we implemented a structured project tracking system in ClickUp.
Design Strategy
Our approach centered on mobile-first design principles, utilizing Material Design and Cupertino patterns to ensure consistency across platforms. We developed user flows for announcement creation and delivery, while designing an intuitive feed-based interface for parents to receive updates. The team created a component library using ShadCN to maintain consistent UI elements throughout the application.
Development & QA
We conducted weekly sprint syncs to track progress and address any blockers in real-time. The development process required careful coordination between frontend and backend teams for API integration, while managing the parallel development of both Announce and Parent Portal features. Our QA process included comprehensive test cases for each feature to ensure quality and reliability.
The platform introduces several core functionalities that enhance school-home communication:
The successful launch of our MVP version for initial testing with select parent groups marked a significant milestone. We established a foundation for a scalable parent communication platform and created a streamlined process for future product iterations. Initial feedback from school administrators regarding the announcement system has been notably positive.
Our initial test group of parents has cited that our Parent Portal features were already saving hours of time weekly with direct announcements--removing the need for parents to directly contact school teachers and administrative staff for student details and campus announcements and events.
Lessons Learned
Through this project, we discovered that early stakeholder alignment on MVP features is crucial for success. Regular technical reviews proved essential in preventing scope creep, while clear documentation of dependencies between features ensured smoother development. We also learned the importance of incorporating user feedback throughout the development process.
Our roadmap includes implementing a robust parent feedback mechanism, enhancing student profile features, adding academic calendar integration, and expanding the platform to additional school districts.
